Charles Lummis was five when the Civil War ended and twenty-two when he went to discover for himself the land on the “left side of the continent.”  Lummis walked the entire distance from Ohio to California in 1892 discovering this great country and spending time with its people.

More than any other single individual, it was this extraordinary explorer, ethnologist, linguist, photographer, journalist, editor, librarian, curator, folklorist, musicologist, and conservationist who molded the popular public perception of the American Southwest and Southern California.

Lummis was founder of the Southwest Museum in Pasadena, California.  In honor of the one hundredth anniversary of Lummis’ arrival in Los Angeles, the Southwest Museum selected 94 photographs for this 1985 exhibition, 50 of which are reproduced in this catalog.
