Dr. Washington Matthews, the author of the two papers presented here, made his greatest contributions while he was an assistant surgeon in the U. S. Army stationed at posts in the Indian reservations.  While he was attached to the garrison at Fort Wingate, New Mexico Territory, he did the field work resulting in these papers.
