Oscar Howe, a Yanktonai Sioux, was born on May 13, 1915, on the Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota, just east of the Missouri River.  At the age of seven, he was separated from his family and sent to the Pierre Indian School where he suffered social isolation because of a disfiguring skin disease.  At the age of ten he was nearly blinded by trachoma. Out of discouragement and despair emerged Oscar Howe the artist, a man of great talent and courage, who is an established painter and a university professor.
