Verlagsgruppe Random House dates back to the traditional C. Bertelsmann Verlag, which was founded in 1835 in Gütersloh. Currently, Verlagsgruppe Random House comprises 45 book publishers, the fiction, children's books, textbooks, theology, guide, audio books and e-books embarrassed. The publishers include Goldmann, Heyne, Blessing, Del Rey, Knaus, Luchterhand, settlers, btb, Manesse, DVA, the Gütersloh publishing house and of course C. Bertelsmann. 

In 1968, the eleven time Bertelsmann's public and non-fiction publishers publishing group Bertelsmann combined; 1972 attracted the trade publishers to Munich. In Gütersloh, the Gütersloh publishing house continues now more than 170 years of theological tradition publisher Bertelsmann. 1974 Del Rey was acquired. The Goldmann Verlag is since 1977 part of the publishing group Bertelsmann. 

In the US, Bertelsmann acquired the 1980 paperback publisher Bantam Books, followed in 1986 the publishing house Doubleday. The American imprints henceforth under Bantam Doubleday Dell. In 1998, Bertelsmann, the respected American publishing house Random House and led it with Bantam Doubleday Dell. It was the new international Verlagsgruppe Random House, Inc.
