From the Foreword
“During the excavations at the ruin site known as Kuaua, on the west bank of the Rio Grande near Bernalillo, New Mexico, routine digging was under way in the south plaza, preparatory to bringing a phase of the work to its conclusions. Suddenly, dull toil shifted to alert interest. With the dirt thrown onto a wheelbarrow, there appeared fragments of plaster covered with flecks of color. The archaeologists in charge began careful investigation with a small trowel, soon revealing the outstretched fingers of an upraised hand painted on the wall of a subterranean chamber. Interest changed to excitement. Then a grotesquely masked head was brought to view, and finally an entire figure. This proved to be one of many depictions painted on the wall of a square room. There was not one decorated surface only, but evidence of many similar ones.”
