A large portion of this book describes the Battle of Sand Creek, better known as the Sand Creek Massacre.  It was in this battle that the famous Chief White Antelope of the Cheyenne was killed and his blanket was taken, a blanket that now resides in the collection of the School for Advanced Research Indian Arts Research Center in Santa Fe.  The book describes the battle in detail and devotes two chapters defending the battle.

 

Note about this Author: Irving Howbert was a principal founder of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the founder of the city’s First National Bank and served twice as its president.
