Willard Nash, Painter

Willard Nash was one of the famous Los Cinco Pintores and was probably the most relaxed of the group. He had a patron from the East who sent him a check every month so that he could work without worry. As a result, he never had to paint a painting for “sellable” reasons. He painted what he wanted.

His fellow group was known as modernist painters, but Nash was often compared to Picasso, especially prominent in his watercolor nudes. Cézanne was the dominant influence in his works of the late 1930s and by the 1940s his paintings had become predominantly abstract.

Willard Nash (1898-1942) came to Santa Fe in 1920, fell in love with it, and returned in 1921 and stayed and painted for the next 15 years. His life was short as a result of tuberculosis. He died at the age of 44.
