Clara Montoya is the granddaughter of Antonio Domingo Peña and Santana Peña; daughter of Reyes Pena and Tomas Montoya; Sister of Maximiliana (Anna) Montoya, Maria Montoya Martinez, Desideria Montoya, and Juanita Vigil.

Clara Montoya was the youngest sister of Maria Martinez. Their mother, Reyes, died shortly after Clara's birth, so she never knew her mother. Clara was nearly deaf from a childhood accident. Maria assumed much responsibility in raising her younger sister. The two developed a very special and close relationship. Clara was admired especially for her skill in polishing pottery. She polished pots for Maria Martinez. The special "mirror finish" of many Maria pots were the work of Clara.
