From the Back Cover
The catalogue Beauty from the Earth: Pueblo Indian Pottery from The University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology serves as an accompaniment to the traveling exhibition of the same title. The exhibition, featuring over one hundred pieces of pottery drawn entirely from the Museum's southwestern collection, explores the aesthetic and expressive qualities of this ancient art tradition over a period of one thousand years. Among the pottery included in the exhibition are pieces made by the Anasazi, ancestors of the modern Pueblo people, as well as examples of pottery made at the western pueblos of Acoma, Laguna, Zia, Zuni and the Hopi villages of First Mesa.
The 112-page catalogue augments the exhibition with information, illustrations, and interpretations. Thirty-five of the most spectacular pieces are presented in color followed by a compendium of over one hundred black-and-white photographs. Written contributions include an essay by J.J. Brody, prominent art historian and curator of the exhibition, in which he discusses the continuum of Anasazi and Pueblo pottery as an art form that has adapted over time to changing qualities of Pueblo life, and an essay by Rebecca Allen introducing the individuals and events that formed the Museum's southwestern pottery collection. This catalogue will serve as a scholarly reference for anthropologists, historians, art historians, artists, and others interested in southwestern pottery.
