In 1962, Dave started his 24-year academic career as Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Colorado - Boulder.  When he retired from the University of Colorado in 1986, he was given the title Professor Emeritus and was awarded the prestigious Stearns Award, given to a select few University of Colorado faculty members for extraordinary achievement in teaching, work with students, and research.

During his career at CU, Dave mentored hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, primarily through their participation in his archaeology field projects.  He conducted research at Dinosaur National Monument, and in eastern Colorado, Tunisia, and Nigeria, but primarily focused on the prehistoric Anasazi culture in southwest Colorado, performing research at Mesa Verde National Park through the University of Colorado Mesa Verde Research Center and in the Dolores River Valley through the Dolores Archaeological Program.   He became Director of the Dolores Archaeological Program in 1978.  He continued to do archaeological field research, often working with former students on projects in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.
