Josephine Arquero, Cochiti Pueblo Potter

Josephine Arquero (1928-2019) was a master Cochiti Pueblo potter celebrated for her expressive figurative ceramics, most notably her Storyteller figures, nacimientos (nativity scenes), and animal forms. She meticulously detailed her human figures in traditional Pueblo attire, imparting each piece with cultural authenticity and individual charm.

Born into a distinguished lineage of ceramic artists, Arquero was the daughter of renowned potter Damacia Cordero, who introduced her to the art of clay figurine construction. While acquiring foundational techniques from her mother, Arquero developed a distinct artistic voice-her figures possess a signature character, warmth, and refined detail separate from her mother's style. She belonged to an extraordinary family of Pueblo ceramic artists, working alongside her sisters Martha Arquero, Marie Laweka, and Gloria Herrera, all of whom became accomplished potters in their own right. Today, Arquero's work remains highly sought after by collectors of Southwestern Native American art.
