Artist Signature of Brian Laban (1967 – ) Hopi/Tewa Talent runs in families and members work together to teach the younger generation the intricacies of the art form. Hopi/Tewa artist Brian Laban is a nephew of two famous Hopi Katsina doll carvers-Muriel Navasie and Cecil Calnimptewa-both of whom taught him the techniques of carving.  Brian Laban (1967 - ) was a construction worker and at the age of 19, he broke his leg and was unable to work.  It was then that his aunt and uncle taught him to carve.  They were already master carvers themselves and it was not long after that Laban began winning awards himself.

According to Schaaf "Brian now is co-founder of the Native American Fitness Council.  As the Director of Training and Instruction, he trains elders as well as professional athletes. Holder of a third degree black belt, Brian runs a martial arts training academy in Arizona.  He is a NAFC Community Fitness Leader and has studied at Westminster College, Utah, Northern Arizona University and Yong in University in South Korea."
