Harold Littlebird: A Contemporary Voice in Pueblo Pottery

Artist signature of Harold Littlebird, Kewa and Laguna Pueblo PotterKewa and Laguna Pueblo artist Harold Littlebird (b. 1951) is renowned for his rare and intimately crafted pottery, distinguished by its quiet elegance. His pieces often feature serene interiors and images that connect deeply with the natural world and Pueblo visual language.

Littlebird's choice of stoneware is an uncommon medium in Pueblo pottery, and his masterful use of it truly sets his creations apart. The significance of his work is underscored by the inclusion of his stoneware items in the permanent collection of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico, marking his important contribution to the broader narrative of contemporary Native ceramics.

Born of Kewa (formerly Santo Domingo) and Laguna Pueblo heritage, Littlebird began his journey in clay under the tutelage of Ralph A. Pardington, graduating from the Institute of American Indian Arts in 1969. Now residing in Florida, his pottery beautifully blends traditional roots with a contemporary sensibility, with each piece, like this exquisite bowl, serving as a testament to that seamless fusion.
