This Hopi Pueblo, Second Mesa, basket could be considered a shallow bowl rather than a plaque, but, by whatever name is used, it is a fine piece.  The yucca stitches are consistently tight and even.  From the very first stitching in the center to the last one at the rim, the basket is magnificent.  It appears that the line from the inner color to the rim is intended as a ceremonial line break.

This pueblo basket is designed in the style of a Navajo ceremonial basket, a not unusual thing for a Hopi to do.  The basket’s unique coloration is its most striking attribute.  A rich, warm color palette was used, with dark brown coils and lighter brown tones evoking fall colors.  This basket has a uniquely beautiful look that will appeal to collectors who appreciate deep, striking colors.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance:  this Second Mesa Coiled Plaque with Navajo Ceremonial Basket Design is from the large collection of a gentleman from California
