Texturizing sterling silver to create different designs is a difficult process. The unknown Navajo artist who made this buckle used a variety of techniques to create a representation of a Navajo rug. The etched step designs are reminiscent of cloud forms and are framed by deep vertical stamps. The etched part is set against a highly polished area that makes for a striking contrast between the two areas.
Although we don’t know who the artist was, the belt buckle was extremely well made. It is stamped with "sterling" and the initials "CAA". It was collected by the current owner in the 1990s.
Condition: this Diné Sterling Silver Buckle with Etched Navajo Rug Design is in very good condition.
Provenance: From the estate of a former client from Oregon who amassed a collection of 40 Native-made belt buckles, some of which we have received and have been posting on our website over the past few months. There are more to be posted in the future.
