Stamped “STERLING NC” on the back of the naja. This exquisite Shadowbox Squash Blossom Necklace is a more delicate and elegant take on the traditional Southwest design. Unlike its larger counterparts, its lighter weight makes it perfect for everyday wear, while still retaining the classic beauty of Native American artistry. This necklace was likely crafted by a talented Diné of the Navajo Nation artist, as evidenced by the masterful use of recessed turquoise stones set within domed "shadowbox" settings. While the specific artist may be unidentified, the timeless craftsmanship makes this piece a true treasure.  It is stamped STERLING NC on the back of the naja.

Example of a naja. What is a naja?  Early Navajo-made jewelry contained elements that were borrowed directly from Spanish colonial and Mexican ornament. One of these items is the naja, a crescent form of Moorish origin. The Spanish conquerors in the Southwest outfitted their horses in elaborate silver ornaments-one of which was the naja that hung directly on the forehead of the horse as a part of the bridle. Today, it is still seen in both Pueblo and Navajo modern jewelry.

The piece includes 14 blossoms, 7 on each side, strung along a sturdy wire for durability. The blossoms are thoughtfully spaced along a sturdy double strand of polished silver beads, creating a classic and balanced design. The necklace is finished with a wire hook clasp for secure wear. At its centerpiece is a meticulously crafted naja, a crescent-shaped pendant symbolic in Navajo culture. The naja features one blossom centered within its design, surrounded by five shadowbox settings. It is intricately constructed from Sterling Silver Sheet and adorned with fine wirework, adding depth and elegance to the piece.
