+Add origin to My Preferences

The Chugach and Aleut are distinct but related Indigenous groups in Alaska with shared maritime traditions. The Chugach are an Alutiiq group living along Prince William Sound, while the Aleut traditionally inhabited the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands. Both groups historically relied on a marine-based subsistence lifestyle, using resources from the sea, and both experienced devastation due to the Russian fur trade and hardship during WWII.

Chugach

  • Geography: Primarily inhabit the coast of Prince William Sound and offshore islands, including the outer Kenai Peninsula.
  • Language/Culture: Part of the larger Alutiiq people, which also includes the Koniag and Unegkurmiut groups. They are known as the Sugpiaq, which means "real people".
  • Subsistence: Skilled in using marine resources, historically hunting sea mammals, fish, and other ocean life from villages located at stream mouths.
  • Modern organizations: Today, groups like the Chugachmiut serve the seven Native tribes in the Chugach region, offering social and health programs.

Aleut

  • Geography: Historically lived on the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands.
  • Subsistence: A maritime people who historically used specialized kayaks (iqyax/qayaq or baidarka) for hunting sea mammals and other sea life.
  • History: Their population was decimated by nearly 80% after Russian colonization due to forced labor, starvation, and disease.
  • World War II Experience: During WWII, Aleut villagers were forcibly relocated to internment camps in Southeast Alaska, where they faced severe hardship, unsanitary conditions, and suffering. The camps lacked proper facilities, leading to hardship, illness, and a significant loss of life.
