Beatien Yazz, Navajo Nation Painter

This very tender scene of a young Navajo boy sharing a slice of watermelon with a bird is a wonderful presentation of Beatien Yazz expressing his childhood. He relates in the book Yazz: Navajo Painter that he had a happy childhood, roaming over the plains and canyons of the Navajo Reservation. He and his closest friend, Philip Shorty, would spend their days playing, swimming in muddy waters, and shooting anything they could find with their slingshots. The interaction of the young boys with animals was not an unusual part of their day.

Black and white paintings by Yazz are not as prevalent as those in brilliant colors, but they are just as charming and just as well executed. The areas of shadowing were accomplished with hundreds of individual black dots, a very time consuming effort.

Condition: The painting is in original excellent condition. It has never been framed and is currently shrink-wrapped for protection. It is signed in lower right.

Provenance: This painting is among a collection from the Balcomb family, formerly owners of an art gallery which they closed in 1976.
