Polychrome Olla with Tattoo Design [R]

Virgil Ortiz is probably one of the most versatile of all pueblo potters. He makes traditional figurative pottery, experimental figurative pottery, traditional pottery vessels, and, now, designer clothing for Donna Karan.

This is a traditional shape olla vessel with a non-traditional design that the artist calls a “tattoo design.” The construction of the vessel is traditional in all aspects.

The artist signed the jar with his name, pueblo, hallmark and date. It was made in 2003, and is in excellent condition.
