Tomás Vigil, Tesuque Pueblo Artist

Tomás Vigil or Pan-Yo-Pin (1889-1960), as he signed his work, was known for the use of indistinct lines, and strongly painted faces were not his forte. His attempt to add depth to his subjects resulted in smudged outlines. The action and color usage in his paintings, however, were quite detailed and wonderful.

In this painting, Pan-Yo-Pin depicted a traditional deer dancer as he would appear at a Pueblo feast. While this painting is relatively simple in construction, the colors are well thought out and the artist captures the spirit of the dance.

Condition: Given the age of this painting, the piece is in fairly good condition. There are a few watermarks lower right and to the right of the dancer. There is a mild fold in the paper just below the dancer’s front foot. The piece is matted and framed in a complementary brown and copper frame. It is signed by the artist lower left.

Provenance: ex. coll. California collector of Native paintings.
