Beatien Yazz, Navajo Nation Painter

Nature in all her splendor provides a child ample opportunity to explore and understand its complexities. For a boy like Beatien Yazz, who grew up on the Navajo Reservation, it was wonderful to see wildlife running free on the vast reservation lands. He would take mental snapshots of various scenes and then transfer them to paper with his paints.

Nature shows many of its sides and this piece focuses on a deer along the river's edge. The deer is getting ready to prey on a fish as it leaps out of the water. To the average person, it is not readily known that deer will eat fish if their normal food is scarce.

Condition: The painting is in original excellent condition except for minor discoloration of the paper at the top left. It could easily be matted out. It has never been framed and is currently shrink-wrapped for protection. It is signed in lower right.

Provenance: From the collection of the family of Balcomb's Ranch Gallery, Colorado.
