Beatien Yazz, Navajo Nation Painter

Special Value Offer: The consignor of this painting has authorized a price reduction of 1/3rd from the original price of $600 to a new price of $400.

Born in 1928, Beatien Yazz is one of the last two living students of Dorothy Dunn of the Santa Fe Indian School, and is essentially a self-taught artist. Growing up on the Navajo Reservation, Yazz acquired an appreciation for the wildlife that roamed free and far with little contact with humans. His sharp ability for capturing scenes in nature in his mind's eye and bringing them to his work allowed him to create spectacular pieces such as this, likely painted in the 60s.

This painting, which depicts an Appaloosa horse and a deer running side by side in the glow of moonlight, captures Yazz's awareness of how animals move in their natural habitat. The piece, which is a wonderful complement to another recent gallery acquisition (see item # C2989O), is demonstrative of the artist becoming more consummate with each decade. His incorporation of background subject matter came later in his life.

Condition: The overall condition of this painting is excellent except for  crease in the lower edge of the painting, which could be flattened when framed. It has never been framed and is currently shrink-wrapped for protection. The signature in the lower right is "Beatian Yazz," one of the various ways the artist signed his work.

Provenance: From the collection of the family of Balcomb's Ranch Gallery, Colorado.
