A Unique Artifact: The Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Pottery Bowl

This historic polychrome pottery bowl, a creation of an Acoma Pueblo artist, stands as a testament to the unique artistry and craftsmanship of its time. Its distinctiveness is evident in several aspects, most notably its form.

The base of the bowl is a perfectly flat circle with a diameter of approximately six inches. While many bowls of this size feature a flat base, they are typically much smaller. The bowl's circular wall deviates from the norm, beginning with a sharp upward curve instead of the usual gentle rounded curve. The rim, flared outward rather than curved inward, adds to the atypicality of the vessel's form. This unique form, undoubtedly, enhances its aesthetic appeal.

The painted designs on the bowl further accentuate its distinctiveness. The exterior and base are devoid of any painted designs, featuring only a red slip and several gray fire clouds. The interior, slipped in white, showcases a large floral element at the center, encircled by ten identical birds near the rim. While the three colors used are not extraordinary in themselves, the way they harmoniously blend to form a desirable palette is indeed special.

The visual impact of the coloration and painted designs is amplified by the patina and visible wear, adding a layer of authenticity and antiquity to the piece. The bowl likely dates back to around 1910, and its age is palpable, contributing to the appealing manner that is highly sought after by collectors of fine historic pottery. This piece, with its unique form and distinctive designs, serves as a remarkable example of Acoma Pueblo pottery.

Condition: excellent condition. Wear from handling and use, including a small exterior rim chip. A slip crack appears near the edge of the base on the exterior, but it does not carry through to the interior.
