Picture of Marie Z Chino - Acoma Pueblo. Source unknown.Pueblo potters routinely make major pottery jars and bowls of the finest quality and beauty.  They also occasionally express their lighter side by making human and animal figurines.  One can imagine Marie Z. Chino taking a break from creating a serious fine line design on a jar to making this Acoma rooster with minimal design. She probably smiled when she finished it.

Of course, the rooster was fashioned in the traditional coil method, painted with traditional pigments, and fired in an outdoor process.  The only way in which it differs from a functional vessel is it is not functional, but was made for pleasure and sale.

Marie Zieu Chino (1907-1982) signature

Condition: some spalling to the clay body and a repair of the rooster’s crown.

Provenance: this Acoma Pueblo Large Pottery Rooster is from the estate of a Santa Fe family
