This Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Historic Pottery Deep Bowl appears to have been used before entering the marketplace.  Bowls were indispensible in pueblo culture before the arrival of commercial products in the late 1800s. Bowls were used for serving food, for eating from, and, occasionally, turned upside down and used as lids on jars.

The utilitarian bowl rests on a flat bottom which has been slipped in white.  The sides expand outward and upward to an inch below the rim, at which point it curves inward—a technique to strengthen the container.  The design is continuous from the white underbody to the rim and consists of geometric designs executed in black and orange colors. The rim is black and the interior is white.

Condition: very good condition with a single rim crack that is minor

Provenance: from the estate of Dr. Tom Dickerson, former physicist and lifetime resident of Santa Fe, and avid collector of Native arts.
