This Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Jar is an exceptional example of refined form and masterful painting. Lightweight due to its thin-wall construction, the jar features a gentle taper from the shoulder to the neck, giving it an elegant, balanced profile. The painting is exquisite and remarkably well-preserved. Each line was applied with confidence and clarity, showcasing the precision and experience of a highly skilled potter.

The standout feature of this jar is the bold design reminiscent of the Zia Pueblo Sun symbol, a powerful emblem found across the Southwest, most notably on the New Mexico state flag. Representing the four cardinal directions, four seasons, four parts of a day, and four stages of life, the symbol speaks to the importance of harmony and balance. Here, circular medallions are uniquely placed within the center of the Sun symbol itself. Three medallions alternate with three vertical elliptical forms that house bold key motifs. This layout creates a rhythm of negative space that feels almost musical in its pacing, an effect only a masterful hand can achieve.

Red is used sparingly but purposefully, appearing only at the base, inside the neck, and within the medallions. This controlled use of color adds warmth and draws the eye to the jar's most important elements. With its dynamic composition, subtle design, and symbolic strength, this piece is a standout within the tradition of Acoma Pueblo pottery.

Condition: excellent condition for a jar of this age, with just one abrasion located at the center of one of the medallions

Provenance: this Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Jar with design reminiscent of Zia Sun Symbol Medallions is from the collection of a client of Adobe Gallery.
