“Altimira Bison” Bronze sculpture by Star Liana York

This bronze sculpture is titled "Altimira Bison" by the artist Star Liana York. It is part of her "Ancient Impressions" or "Rock Art" series, which draws inspiration from prehistoric cave paintings and petroglyphs. York is well-known for her ability to translate these ancient, two-dimensional symbols into dynamic, three-dimensional bronze forms.

The title refers to the Cave of Altamira in Spain, famous for its Upper Paleolithic charcoal drawings and polychrome paintings of wild mammals, most notably the bison. The "leaping" or charging pose is a direct nod to how prehistoric artists utilized the natural bumps and curves of cave ceilings to give their paintings a sense of movement and volume.

​Star Liana York is a prominent Southwest sculptor based in Northern New Mexico (Abiquiu). Her work is highly regarded for its "empathic realism," capturing the spirit of her subjects — whether they are Native American figures, wildlife, or the horses she raises on her ranch.
