This very well executed casting of an American Indian sitting on a rock outcropping with his spear is a Jennings Brothers accent light. The modeling of the figure is natural and well detailed. Most unusual is the original painted finish in muted brown tones. The cast metal form, and pattinated and painted finish, are in exceptional condition.
The lamp, created in the 1920s, has its original 3-inch diameter crackled glass shade. The internal electrical fitting is original to the lamp with porcelain fitting accepting a 4watt bulb. The lamp has been professionally rewired. The back of the lamp is signed JB 2227 and Pat Appl'd., a patent application by Jennings Brothers Manufacturing Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
In 1891, the Jennings Brothers Manufacturing Company began their manufactory in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They continued business into the early 1900s. The company produced some of the finest crafted art metal pieces ever made during this Arts and Crafts time period. Their creations included high grade bookends, candlesticks, jewelry boxes, lamps and figurative items. Not lending themselves to mass production, their methods were exacting and painstakingly detailed. They relied upon the expertise of artists, sculptors and metal smiths. Even today, Jennings Brothers metal works of art are highly prized. Existing examples bear the distinctive hallmark of JB are keenly internationally sought after by collectors.
This is a wonderful sculpture and lamp to use as a night light or to sit alongside a Native American collection. It is a perfect item to accompany a collection of vintage items of the Arts and Crafts time period.
