Ben Nighthorse Campbell is a notable Native American jeweler and former United States Senator from Colorado. As a master lapidary artist, he is known for his skill in cutting stones and meticulously inlaying delicate pieces with near perfection. His jewelry often features high-quality precious stones.
This sterling silver bracelet is an excellent example of his work. Its wide surface showcases five horses, each intricately inlaid with different gemstones, giving them a unique color and character. These inlays are set against a mustard-yellow material that has not yet been identified. The bracelet is signed Ben Nighthorse.
Campbell's journey as a jeweler began in childhood when he learned the craft from his father. He honed his skills further in Japan, where he studied both judo and jewelry-making techniques. He went on to captain the US Olympic Judo team at the 1964 Tokyo Games. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, he balanced his work as a high school teacher and judo instructor with making jewelry and working with troubled youth.
