The Artist: Ben Nighthorse Campbell

Ben Nighthorse Campbell's life is a remarkable journey of diverse achievements. Born to a Northern Cheyenne father, he overcame a difficult childhood and a high school dropout status to join the Air Force, serving during the Korean War. After his service, he pursued his education, earning degrees in Physical Education and Fine Arts from San Jose State University.

Building on the jewelry-making skills he learned from his father, Campbell further honed his craft in Japan, where he also studied judo. His dedication to judo led him to captain the 1964 U.S. Olympic Judo Team at the Tokyo Games. In the 1960s and '70s, he balanced teaching and working with at-risk youth with his passion for creating jewelry.

In 1982, Campbell entered politics and, in 1992, made history as the first Native American to serve in the U.S. Senate, where he served two terms. Today, he continues to work as both a political consultant and a celebrated jewelry maker.
