Cecil Calnimptewa is widely regarded as one of the most influential katsina carvers of all time. His work has been extensively documented in publications on Hopi katsina dolls and has inspired countless artists. Entire books have been dedicated to his remarkable carvings.

He was born on January 1, 1950, in the Hopi village of Moencopi, Arizona. His artistic journey began at the young age of 18 when he carved and sold his first katsina doll. Since then, he has been known as a renowned innovator, teacher, and master of the craft.

Calnimptewa's katsina dolls are celebrated for their exceptional detail, lifelike qualities, and dynamic poses. He is particularly skilled at carving intricate belts, sashes, and garments, as well as capturing the musculature and movement of the figures. His work is characterized by its aesthetic beauty and powerful presence.
