Each bookend shows a squatting Indian with his hand shading his eyes while he is scouting ahead. In his left hand he holds a weapon. He is wearing a loin cloth, moccasins, and a full feather headdress. Each bronze bookend weighs 2.8 lbs and is stamped with mold #9696. Each has the original green felt on the bottom and one of them has remnants of the paper label on the felt.
Judd Manufacturing Company (or H.L. Judd) was a historic American metal goods producer, famous for decorative cast iron items like mechanical banks, doorstops, and bookends, especially during the Art Nouveau era, which were eventually acquired by Stanley Works in 1954. The company evolved from a blacksmith shop in Connecticut, shifting from harness hardware (North & Judd) to household items, leaving behind a legacy of collectible, finely detailed metalware, distinct from the modern Judd Foundation, which produces Donald Judd's furniture designs.
