Cochiti Pueblo has always been known for its pottery figures so the natural progression to making nativities by the potters is not surprising. Whimsical figures and animals from Cochiti Pueblo have become very collectable and some families have created their legacy by making figurines. Louise Suina is one of several potters from Cochiti Pueblo that makes figurines and nativities. She is a member of the well-known Suina family and was cousin to Helen Cordero and Seferina Ortiz. Her figures are typically small and well formed. Louise used natural pigments on this lovely set which includes a kneeling Mary and Joseph, a burro with a painted blanket and a lamb. The Christ Child is on a manger made of a small round cotton pad with pieces of dry grass. Although the set is small, the five pieces display remarkable detail. Under the Christ Child the artist has signed Louise Suina. Condition: very good with one broken ear on the donkey which has been glued. Provenance: from a Santa Fe collector.
