This early Cochiti Pueblo pottery storyteller figurine by Josephine Arquero was made when the Cochiti cream color bentonite slip was still available, which, unfortunately, it is no longer. Many Cochiti potters have ceased making pottery because of the loss of the bentonite slip.
This female figurine is seated and has two children on her front and two clinging to her back. She, herself, is dressed in a polka dotted blouse over which she is wearing a traditional pueblo dress that rides over one shoulder and under the arm on the other side. Her eyes are open, which is somewhat unusual as most potters make storytellers with closed eyes.
The four children seem to be dressed as boys with decorated pueblo style shirts and long pants. The figurine is signed Josephine Arquero Cochiti N.M.
Condition: this Cochiti Pueblo Seated Female Storyteller Figurine with 4 Children by Josephine Arquero is in very good condition
Provenance: from the collection of a client of ours.
