Historic Cochiti Pueblo Drum

This vintage Cochiti Pueblo drum is a striking example of both artistry and ceremonial function. It is painted in a bold design of alternating red and light-yellow triangles, all framed by black lines. The top and bottom are made of sturdy cowhide, painted black. The evidence of its use adds to the piece's authentic appeal, telling a story of its history within the Pueblo.

Drums of all sizes, both painted and unpainted, are essential to Pueblo ceremonies. If a Pueblo does not have its own drum maker, they will acquire drums through purchase or trade from a neighboring Pueblo known for the craft. The drum is central to the rhythm of the dances, with songs beginning slowly and building to a climax. At a specific point, the drum is flipped over to produce a higher beat, a percussive change that revitalizes the dancers and gives them the impetus to continue their performance.
