Fred Harvey was only 15 years old when he immigrated to the United States. He worked in a series of restaurants and eventually opened a chain of hotels and restaurants along the railroad between Chicago and Los Angeles. As more and more people began to travel to the Southwest, Harvey helped develop markets for Indian made objects. Fred Harvey souvenirs included distinctive elements which today are associated with the “Fred Harvey Style".   Among the articles made by the Indian smiths were various types of boxes.

This small box is made of copper with a sterling silver eagle set on the top. Surrounding the eagle are stamped arrows, one of the trademark stamps used by Fred Harvey silversmiths. The top fits snuggly and is connected to the bottom with well-crafted copper hinges. Such a piece would have been the perfect one to buy to remember traveling to the Southwest. Today, it brings back memories of the romance of the era of railroad and road trip travel to Indian Country.

Condition: very good condition
