"Butterfly I" is a monoprint by Hopi-Tewa artist Dan Namingha. A monoprint is like a monotype, and often created using a similar process. While the two terms are often used interchangeably, there is a notable difference: a monotype is a totally unique artwork, and a monoprint is part of a series of similar but slightly different images. Within a series of monoprints, a common visual element is repeated in each image while other elements or characteristics change from print to print. Often, the repeating visual element comes from an image that is carved or etched into a plate, and the colors vary throughout the series.

"Butterfly I" is a beautiful example of Namingha's work. The subject's mask and tableta occupy much of the image, making use of an appealing combination of blue, purple, and green tones. Bright red triangular forms appear just below the eyes, and additional touches of the red tone appear near the print's upper edge. The printed area is situated in the center of a significantly larger paper, creating a strong visual presentation.

The print is signed Dan Namingha, dated 92, and titled Butterfly I in pencil. It is mounted over a white backing with the entire paper exposed, in a beautiful gold frame.

The print is signed “Dan Namingha,” dated “92,” and titled “Butterfly I” in pencil.
