Dianna Tahbo, Hopi-Tewa Potter

Crafted in 1993, this early Hopi-Tewa jar by Dianna Tahbo is a stunningly elegant departure from traditional Sikyatki designs. Surrounding the upraised rim, Tahbo placed a striking five-point star filled with dappled red pigment over a cream slip. Tucked between the points of the star are triangular fields containing a pair of eagle tails and a deep red triangle. A continuous, bold black framing line anchors the composition at the jar's widest point, underscored by a delicate series of small, parallel black accent lines. The lower half of the vessel transitions into a beautifully burnished orange blush over a warm yellow slip.

The jar is signed: Dianna Tahbo Tewa/Hopi '93'

About the Artist

Dianna Tahbo (1941-2011) descended from a distinguished lineage of potters; she was the sister of Mark Tahbo (1958-2017), granddaughter of Alma Tahbo, and great-granddaughter of the legendary Grace Chapella.

Over her 30-year career, Tahbo has proved herself an accomplished artisan, drawing significant creative influence from her brother, Mark. Because she was not a highly prolific potter, her works are rarely encountered today, making this exceptional piece a scarce and desirable example of her mastery.
