Artist signature of Duane Dishta (1946-2011) Zuni Pueblo, SHE-WE-NAThis painting by Duane Dishta (1946-2011) is a masterful example of his dedication to documenting the Zuni katsina (spirit being) pantheon with ethnographic precision. The subject matter is four katsinas from the Zuni Shalako Ceremony. They are:

Lower left: Shulawitsi, the Little Fire God. He must be impersonated by a preadolescent boy who is too young to have had sexual intercourse. The emphasis on having a virgin youth in a role so important is unique in the Southwest.

Next step up: Saiyatasha - The rain Priest of the North. He is the foremost impersonator in the Shalako Ceremony, where he makes his only appearance. He brings all manner of benefits to the Zuni, from the control of weather to longevity and protection from enemies.

Next step up: Yamuhakto - Wood Carriers. He accompanies the Saiyatasha group and appears only at this time. He is an assistant who brings all kinds of things for the Zuni but most particularly wood in all of its uses as symbolized by his head piece.

Next step up: Hututu - who is Saiyatasha's deputy whose actions and purpose appear to be a reinforcement of those of Saiyatasha.

Lower right: Salimopia - Only two of which appear in the Shalako each year. There are six Salimopia:  Blue and yellow appear one year, red and white the next, and mixed and black the third year.

The artist placed the masks of the Shalako participants in the night sky, a recognition of the significance as mediators between humans and gods.

Duane Dishta was renowned for his ability to blend traditional subject matter with a refined, contemporary painting style. His work, particularly his illustrations for the book Zuni Kachinas, served to preserve the visual details of Zuni ceremonies. This specific painting captures the dignity and power of the katsina bringing the prayers of the people to life.
