Encarnacion Peña San Ildefonso “Yucca Dance”

This striking painting depicts a line of five dancers performing a Yucca Dance, captured with traditional flat style characteristic of early Pueblo fine art. Encarnacion Peña was exceptionally skilled at documenting the ceremonial dances and daily life of San Ildefonso Pueblo. The Yucca Dance features dancers holding yucca fronds — an important plant deeply tied to purification, strength, and ritual life in the Southwest. Additionally, potters used brushes made from the leaf of the yucca plant for painting designs on pottery. Notice the intricate details of the traditional ceremonial regalia: the feathered head ornamentation, evergreen ruffs, embroidered kilts, side-sashes, and decorated leg bands.

Encarnación Peña was part of the pioneering generation of self-taught Pueblo watercolorists that emerged in the early 20th century alongside contemporaries like Alfonso Roybal (Awa Tsireh) and Tonita Peña. His work provides an invaluable ethnological and artistic record of Tewa ceremonial traditions.

Soqueen (meaning "Frost on the Mountain") was the Tewa given name of Encarnación Peña (1902-1979). Because Peña frequently signed his works with his Tewa name, his English name, or a combination of both (as seen here along with the date 1976), pieces carrying dual signatures or references to "Soqueen" represent his mature artistic output later in life.
