On this item, we are venturing into something of which we know absolutely nothing. We accepted this on consignment because it was part of the estate of Santa Fe Indian art dealer and collector Marti Struever.
From what we can surmise, it is a carved knife from fossilized walrus ivory. Fossilized ivory, with age, assumes a beautiful cream color with shades of copper color. The carved upper half of a male appears to be of an Eskimo.
Eskimo is a language and a group of indigenous peoples inhabiting the Arctic, from Siberia, through Alaska and Northern Canada, to Greenland, including the Inuit and Yupik.
Condition: very good condition
Provenance: this Probable Eskimo Fossilized Ivory Knife is from the estate of Santa Fe Indian art dealer and collector Marti Struever.
