Artist Frances Torivio (1905-2001) was a significant matriarch of Acoma Pueblo, renowned for her large pottery jars and an extensive variety of other forms. Beginning her career in the 1920s, Torivio produced Mimbres and Anasazi Revival pieces in black-on-white and traditional polychrome, earning her a distinguished reputation. As a sister of Lolita Concho and the mother of potters Lilly Salvador and Wanda Aragon, she played a pivotal role in mentoring her daughters and other Acoma Pueblo potters. Remarkably, Torivio continued to showcase her work at the Santa Fe Indian Market until the age of 96 in 2001, proudly displaying smaller pieces of her pottery. Her long and fruitful career was marked by numerous exhibitions, significant awards, and the inclusion of her works in notable collections.
