Taos Field (1979) is a bold and abstracted monotype by Fritz Scholder that captures a familiar scene from Northern New Mexico — a narrow roadway bordering a sunlit summer field with distant mountains in the background. While the subject is rooted in the real, Scholder's treatment is far from conventional. Executed in his distinctive expressive style, the composition blends abstraction and representation, using striking color choices and simplified forms. A pink road cuts through the scene beneath a classic blue sky, transforming the landscape into something simultaneously recognizable and surreal.
This particular monotype shares its setting with Scholder's Mystery Horse in Taos lithograph series, suggesting it may have served as a preliminary exploration for that body of work. Whether or not it was a direct study, Taos Field offers a compelling glimpse into Scholder's creative process and the visual research behind his iconic imagery.
Printed on light grey paper with deckled edges, this hand-signed monotype is a unique, one-of-a-kind work. Unlike traditional prints made from reusable plates, a monotype involves painting or drawing with paint or ink directly onto a smooth surface, then transferring the image to paper using a press. The result is a singular impression, making each monotype entirely original.
