This late 1800s Acoma Pueblo parrot jar is a striking example of historic pottery, notable for its rare dark patina and bold design. Three parrots alternate with stylized floral leaf motifs, arranged in a deliberate X-shaped composition that draws the eye across the form. Painted in black and red pigments over a white slip on a greyish-white clay base, the jar exemplifies true polychrome technique.
One side of the jar bears a prominent firecloud — evidence of the outdoor firing process — that has deepened the surrounding pigments to a richer tone. This visual shift enhances the contrast with the more polished areas of white slip, which remained less affected, adding a layer of character and unique beauty to the piece.
A particularly charming detail is found on the underside of the jar, where a historical price of Fity:Cent has been hand-painted and fired in during the final process. This rare inscription offers a glimpse into the early commercial history of Pueblo pottery and adds both provenance and much personality to the piece.
Condition: Very good condition for a jar of this age. There is one pop-out on the neck and another on the rim.
Provenance: This Late 1800s Acoma Pueblo Parrot Jar with Price Inscription is from the collection of a client of Adobe Gallery.
