Historic Acomita Bowl with Exterior Design c. 1820-1840

This Acomita bowl, dating to circa 1820-1840, is a remarkable example of early utilitarian pottery that was both beautifully made and heavily used. Measuring 24 inches in diameter, it was likely used as a food bowl and bears visible signs of daily use. The bowl is thinly constructed, with a red-orange slip coating both the interior and exterior surfaces. Black pigment was used to decorate the rim and the primary design elements that encircle the bowl, which remain visible despite age and wear.

The painted design consists of capped-spiral pairs arranged into graceful S-figures. These rotationally symmetric doublets are distinctive and relate closely to the stylistic elements described in The Pottery of Acoma Pueblo by Dwight P. Lanmon and Francis H. Harlow. Though the bowl's form and finish are simple, the decoration is carefully executed, adding an elegant visual rhythm to its wide, open surface.

This piece exemplifies the balance between function and design seen in early 19th-century Acomita ceramics and is a rare surviving example of its type.

Condition: good condition with two rim chips and one vertical crack with native repair
