This beautifully crafted Zia Pueblo jar, dating to around 1920, features the even-walled, sturdy construction typical of traditional Zia pottery. The cream slip, serving as the background for the design, has been rag-polished to a soft, lustrous finish, giving the surface a warm and refined appearance.
The jar's form is elegant and slightly more slender than most ollas, lending it a graceful silhouette. Encircling the body are curving double-rainbow bands, outlined in black, which frame the central design. The rainbows gracefully cascades above and below the shoulder of the water jar. Above the rainbows are large bold split petals painted in black, accented by smaller vivid heart-shaped red flower petals that draw the eye and emphasize the symmetry of the composition.
Small stylized rain clouds painted in black are arranged rhythmically around the jar, creating a visual bridge between the upper and lower arcs of the rainbow. A delicate plant motif anchors the lower portion of the jar, adding a sense of lightness and flow. These elements come together in a harmonious rhythm that reflects the distinctive character and charm of high-quality Zia rainbow jars.
The piece was coil-formed using native clay mixed with crushed basaltic temper, a traditional method that provides strength and durability. The underbody is stone-polished over the natural clay paste, revealing a rich brick red tone that contrasts beautifully with the soft cream slip and painted motifs above. This jar is a fine example of early 20th-century Zia Pueblo artistry — balanced, vibrant, and thoughtfully composed.
