This Zia Pueblo OLLA, or water jar, likely dates to the late 1800s, which places it within the designation of Zia Polychrome. Typology designations of pueblo pottery have been assigned by noted authorities based on observed changes over decades. At Zia Pueblo, one of the earlier designations is Puname Polychrome (1700-1760) which was followed by the designation San Pablo Polychrome (1760-1820), then Trios Polychrome (1820-1860) and, finally, today's designation of Zia Polychrome (1860-present).

Although designations have been assigned to periods of production as shown above, it must be remembered that potters actively working at the time did not necessarily make changes simultaneously. A potter making pottery in 1855, during what has been designated as the Trios Polychrome period, might have continued her style until well after 1860. Technically, according to the authorities, she was in the Zia Polychrome period, although she, herself, was still making what she had learned to make in the Trios Polychrome designated period. The designation was not observed by potters, only by authorities studying pottery.

This beautiful olla displays a gorgeous example of the elegant design style that emerged during the Trios period, painted over a vessel that clearly dates to the Polychrome period—Trios vessels were more globular. This piece has a strong, beautifully executed vessel form, with a high shoulder and an upturned rim. From certain angles, the viewer will notice a slight lean to one side. From other angles, the olla appears to be perfectly balanced.

Its history of use is apparent in the slip loss around the rim, a pattern of light abrasion, and visible calcium deposits on the exterior and interior. It is beautifully (and somewhat gently) patinated, with a soft glow enhancing the muted color palette created by the slip and painted designs. Those who appreciate the look and feel of a well-used nineteenth century piece should give this piece consideration.
