This magnificent Zuni Pueblo polychrome jar, made in the 1880s, reflects the skilled craftsmanship and artistic style of historic Zuni pottery. Painted in black and a limited amount of reddish brown on a white slip, it features the classic three-color design that became a hallmark of Zuni pottery in the late 19th century. The bold, traditional patterns are carefully applied with great attention to detail.
The top band features an alternating double-ended scroll motif paired with dagger figures, adding a sense of dynamic movement around the vessel. Just below the shoulder is a frieze of four small Zuni birds on each side, bringing a delicate and balanced rhythm to the design. Vertical double-ended scrolls separate the main design panels, giving the olla an uncommon and visually striking appearance.
What makes this jar especially remarkable is the clear sense of history it carries. The surface has developed an even patina from years of everyday use, showing it was once a functional part of daily life in the pueblo. The wear it shows is not damage, but a sign of its age and authenticity. It is in very good condition, with minor surface abrasions due to age and some visible wear on one side of the rim — evidence of its long and continued use.
In the 1880s, Zuni Pueblo remained an active and creative community despite outside pressures from the U.S. government and missionaries. Pottery continued to be both a practical tool and a form of cultural expression. Zuni potters stayed true to traditional methods using local materials and time-tested techniques. Jars like this one were often used to carry or store water and were a regular part of household life.
Condition: very good condition, with some surface abrasions consistent with age and noticeable wear on one side of the rim
