This untitled abstract mixed media painting by Joe Maktima is a layered composition of varied textures and a rich palette of colors, anchored by a central gold square. The gold element draws the eye and serves as a focal point amidst the surrounding expressive gestures and surface variations. Pieces like this offer Maktima a space to explore mark making and intuitive movement, allowing the process itself to become part of the finished work.
Signed "Maktima" in the upper right corner, this painting is an example of the artist's ability to merge contemporary abstraction with a personal visual language. Joe Maktima, of Hopi and Laguna Pueblo descent, was born in Winslow, Arizona in 1962 and raised in a family of artists in Flagstaff. A 1985 graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts, he received the "Most Promising Artist Award" at Santa Fe Indian Market and has since exhibited widely. His work has been featured in major collections, including the Eiteljorg Museum, and continues to reflect a dynamic blend of cultural heritage and contemporary expression.
