Award winning artist Dan Namingha is frequently referred to as one of the most successful Native American artists working today. He is known for his Hopi Pueblo imagery with modern abstraction and other more personalized expressions. Comparatively, Dan Namingha’s work here is fairly straightforward; the image is bold, colorful and exciting. The highlight is the one area in which the artist ventured into more experimental territory—the hummingbird’s ruff. Here, we see a beautiful mass of color, with dark reds, bold blue-greens and rich yellows blending together beautifully. This is a wonderful katsina painting from one of the greatest living Hopi painters. The painting is signed “Namingha” in lower right. It is titled, dated, and signed again on verso. The image is painted on canvas, which is wrapped around a wood frame. Its four outside edges are painted black.
